The World of Beatrix Potter sits on Crag Brow in the middle of Bowness, a couple of minutes from the lake, and it does exactly what its name says: it recreates the twenty-three tales as three-dimensional sets that you walk through, with the characters modelled and the scenes lit and dressed.
It is worth being clear at the outset about what it is and is not. This is a commercial indoor attraction for young children, not a literary or biographical museum. Beatrix Potter’s actual house is Hill Top across the lake, and her original artwork is at the Beatrix Potter Gallery in Hawkshead. If you want her, go there. A walk-through of the tales, scene by scene: Peter Rabbit in Mr McGregor’s garden, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Mrs Tiggy-Winkle’s kitchen, Tom Kitten, the Two Bad Mice. The sets are detailed and there is sound, lighting and weather.
At the end there is Peter Rabbit’s Garden, an indoor garden space, and a tearoom with a Potter theme that does a full menu.
There is also a shop, which is substantial, and which a good proportion of visitors treat as part of the visit.
Under-eights who know the books: exactly right, and the reaction from that age group is consistently delighted.
Parents and grandparents: better than expected, largely for the recognition — the sets follow the illustrations closely and the detail rewards anyone who read the books as a child.
Adults with a serious interest in Potter: less so. It is an hour of gentle entertainment, and Hill Top and the Hawkshead gallery are the substantial visits.
Non-English speakers: the interpretation is available in several languages, which is unusually good for an attraction of this size.
The building is not large and it gets very busy in the school holidays and on wet days, when everyone in Bowness has the same idea at once. Visitors regularly report that the crowding spoils it — you shuffle rather than look.
The fix is timing: go early, go late in the day, or go out of season. Booking a timed slot in advance is worth doing in summer.
